If you are starving for the the warm, buttery color of gold, there are different metal options available that are sure to to satisfy your hunger.

  • Solid Gold: Pure gold is very soft. Alloys are mixed with solid gold for strength and create gold with different karat values like 10k, 14k, and 18k, with the most popular being 14k in the United States. Gold lasts a long time and retains its value. Gold is also very dense and has a substantial feel, but is the most expensive option. Gold does not tarnish or fade with repeated wear.

  • Gold Filled: Solid gold sheets are rolled out then applied to a base metal, usually brass or copper, with heat. This results in a thick layer of gold that is required in the US to be 5% of the total weight. Gold filled jewelry is often marked 14k GF. Gold filled gives you the look of gold without the price tag.

  • Gold Plate: A thin layer of solid gold is added to a more budget-friendly base material, like copper or brass, but may turn your skin green because of those base metals. The gold plate can chip off or easily be rubbed off. Gold plate jewelry won't last long.

  • Gold Vermeil: Similar to gold plating, gold vermeil is light gilt of gold, usually on a base metal of sterling silver. The jewelry pieces are usually marked 925 for silver and coated in gold. This is also a more budget-friendly option, but the plating will wear off.
